How to further identify jade and water foam by scientific methods

Through scientific methods to further identify clear water jade and water foam, we can start from the following aspects:

Beautiful earringsClear water jade: high density, usually about 3.33 g/cm ³. Due to the high density, there will be obvious pressure feel in the hand. Water foam: The density is low, generally between 2.6 and 2.8 g/cm ³. Compared with jade, water foam feel light, lack of sinking feeling.

Identification method: The density of the two can be measured using hydrostatic methods, or simply by hand to feel the weight difference.

Clear water jade: high hardness, Mohs hardness is generally between 6.5 and 7, can be marked on the glass. Water foam: Relatively low hardness, unable to leave scratches on the glass. Even if polished, the gloss of water foam is not as good as jade, and it is easy to break.

Identification method: You can try to gently scratch the glass with jade or water foam to observe whether you can leave scratches on the glass. However, please note that this method may cause damage to the jade, so it is recommended to use with caution.

Clear water jade: with glass luster, bright luster and rigid foot, can reflect light well. Water foam: The gloss is weak, there is no rigid glass luster of jade, and it looks relatively soft.

Identification method: The difference of gloss between the two was observed under strong light. The luster of jade is more dazzling, while the luster of water foam is relatively soft.

Clear water jade: high transparency, can clearly see its internal structure and texture. High-quality jade can even be seen inside the fine fibrous colorless jadeite minerals tightly intertwined to form a felt-like structure. Water foam: Although it also has a certain degree of transparency, its internal structure is relatively simple, often fibrous or radially arranged albiar composed of granular structure, and may contain more white "stone brain" and "cotton".

Identification method: Use a magnifying glass or microscope to observe the internal structural differences between the two. The internal structure of jadeite is complex and delicate, while the internal structure of water foam is relatively simple and may contain more impurities.

Clear water jade: the refractive index is higher, usually around 1.66.

Water foam: The refractive index is low, generally between 1.52 and 1.54.

Identification method: Using refractometer to measure the refractive index of the two, can accurately distinguish the Qingshui jade and water foam.

The difference of chemical composition between jadeite and water foam can be further confirmed by spectroscopic analysis.

Clear water jade: striking sound crisp and pleasant, strong penetration. Water foam: Percussion sound dull and weak, weak penetration.

Identification method: Gently tap the two, listen to the sound difference. Note, however, that this method requires a certain amount of experience to judge accurately.

If conditions permit (raw materials or semi-finished products), hard objects such as quartz can be used for carving. Jadeite is more difficult to be carved, while water foam is relatively easy to be carved.

It is necessary to consider the physical properties, optical properties and professional identification methods to further identify the jade and water foam by scientific methods. In practice, it is suggested to combine a variety of methods for comprehensive judgment to improve the accuracy of identification. For non-professionals, it is best to seek the help of professional identification agencies to ensure the accuracy of identification.
